Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams and the A-list paint it black on the sodden BAFTAs red carpet

By DONNA MCCONNELL

Moody in black: Anne Hathaway arrived on the sodden red carpet wearing a waterfall style black jacket on top of her Burberry gown

Perhaps after the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Golden Globes and the Emmys the A-list were fast running out of inspiration.
Or more likely the dreary rainy weather did little to inspire, as Anne Hathaway led a rainy parade of A-list stars at the EE BAFTAs wearing classic black gowns.
While Anne's Burberry dress was embellished with gold stud detailing, the simple column gown was a more low key look than she has worn on the red carpet of late.

Sheer perfection: Amy Adams looked incredible in her Elie Saab lace detail gown

Trouble With The Curve star Amy Adams black gown was the epitome of gothic glamour, with the bodice and sleeves consisting of delicate lace, plunging to the waist, which she teamed with Faberge jewellery.
Stilettos sank into a sodden red carpet as Les Mis star Samantha Barks, Emilia Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker and Alicia Vikander gathered in cold and rainy London on Sunday for the BAFTAs.
Fox stunned in a strapless Givenchy frock, while she attempted to add some colour with her emerald necklace, earrings and bracelet.

Keeping dry: Anne Hathaway made sure her designer gown didn't get ruined as some stewards helped cover her in umbrellas

Making her mark: Gemma ensured she stood out as she mingled with the A-listers in the shimmering dress on Sunday evening

But even the ladies who opted to shun the usual dress code of a flowing gown also opted top keep in the safe limits of black.
Sarah Jessica Parker stepped on to the red carpet looking unusually off the mark in her Elie Saab jumpsuit, a look mimicked by TV presenter Laura Whitmore.
The blonde TV host showed how to sex up the jumpsuit look with the plunging cut and hint of side boob in her Alexandre Vauthier outfit.

Dressing it up: TV presenter Amanda Byram glittered on to the red carpet in her dark gown, while Zawe Ashton flashed some flesh with her intricate Julien Macdonald number

And even her pal Caroline Flack wore black with her jewel embellished dress, being one of the first to brave the cold in front of the waiting fans and photographers.
Rain turned to snow as the first nominees appeared, but the dreadful weather did not deter fans three rows deep who waited for hours to catch a glimpse of Hollywood A-listers arriving the Royal Opera House in the heart of London.
'I'm cold and really excited. It's a funny combination. It's the first time I'm seeing snowfall,' Suraj Sharma, nominated in the rising star category for his role in Life of Pi.

Ducking for cover: Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard - in Christian Dior - opted for more colour but didn't seem to be enjoying the downpour ruining their entrance
