Gosh! Posh pulls it off: Liz Jones was her biggest critic, but as Victoria Beckham's new collection wows New York she's happy to eat humble pie

By LIZ JONES

Liz says: A little too Wimbledon, and the collar is a bit Chanel, but I love the flip-flops crossed with knee-high boots, which I'm naming the floot. Liz says: My dress of the season - classy, sexy, understated and flattering. Expect a near £3,000 price tag and a waiting list

My mouth is full of feathers, net and bits of straw. Why? I have just eaten my Debenhams fascinator, so impressed am I by Victoria Beckham’s catwalk show yesterday morning in New York.
While I didn’t eat my expensive Vivien Sheriff hat — I am not completely won over by her transformation from pop star and WAG to fashion designer — I am prepared to tuck into a generous slice of humble pie.

Liz says: The perfect cocktail dress, with no cleavage, no exposed thighs, just slender arms. I'd love to see the Duchess of Cambridge in this. Liz says: I love the sharp shoulders, the tiny waist and lack of embellishment. I'll never look a sequin in the eye again!

And, don’t worry, I haven’t been bribed with a free crocodile handbag or a front-row seat next to David Beckham, who was sporting a Tintin quiff. In fact, I am still barred from her shows. So this glowing verdict is not grateful sycophancy.

Liz says: This hot orange dress shows real confidence, and I love the cutaway shoulders. Quick, hide that smile! Wearing one of her own designs, Victoria looks happy for once

Instead, it’s acknowledgment that Mrs Beckham has talent, an eye for shape and colour and has obviously put in a great deal of hard work.
And what was most unbelievable on Sunday morning was that she even cracked a smile as she took her bow, an unheard-of gesture in the stony world of fashion — and an indication she has finally relaxed into her new role.
So, what worked? Well, while I admired her first few collections, which featured only body-con dresses in a style she would wear herself, I’ve always bemoaned the fact she has never tackled tailoring — jackets and trousers — which are the most difficult pieces to do well.

It's Tintin! No, it's Mr Victoria Beckham holding Harper. Have these people never heard of a pushchair?
